"In 1693 Louis XIV founded the Order of St. Louis for the military and conferred the Order of St. Michael to artists and writers. In the eighteenth century there was an inflation of honors and the crisis of chivalric culture, caused by the Enlightenment, changed orders decorations, a process that ended the Napoleonic era with the creation of the Legion of Honor ":
